STEM Challenge - Can You Make Corn Dance?

November 20, 2017

Need a last minute STEM challenge? Make corn dance with our fun, new challenge!

You only need a few items and you are ready to have some fun.

Are you up for the challenge? Let's make corn dance.

What you need...

  • Tall Jar

  • 1/2 Cup Popping Corn

  • 1 Tbsp Baking Soda

  • 1/4 Cup Vinegar

  • 1 Cup Water

  • Spoon

What you need to do...

  • Gather students around the jar and ask them to start predicting what they think might happen. Let students share their answers.

  • Fill the jar with water and add the baking soda to the water.

  • Use the spoon and stir to dissolve the baking soda.

  • Add corn kernels to the water and baking soda.

  • Start adding the vinegar very slowly!

  • Let students watch the dancing corn and make predictions about why they think this is happening.

    • You can explain the baking soda and vinegar chemical reaction that produces carbon dioxide. Tell them that the carbon dioxide bubbles are what lifts the corn and when they pop the corn falls back down.

We would love to see you try this STEM Challenge. Share your results with us through social media!
