Our STEM Challenge for the week focuses on engineering. Students in this challenge are going to build a bridge that can hold pennies.
We want to really challenge them and see if they can build a bridge out of straws, scotch tape, and index cards that can hold 100 pennies for at least 30 seconds!
Think you are up for the challenge?
What you need..
What you need to do...
Before students start building have each student brainstorm three ways they think might work for building their bridge to hold 100 pennies for at least 30 seconds.
Once students are done brainstorming have them pair up with another student.
In pairs let students discuss how they think they can build their bridge to hold the pennies.
Have each student choose one of their three brainstormed methods and give students all the materials they are going to need.
We recommend at least 10 straws and index cards per student.
When students are done building and they feel their bridge is ready to be tested have each student come to the front of the room and give their bridge a try to see if it meets our challenge!
We would love to see you try this STEM Challenge. Share your results with us through social media!
