Can You Create Lava?

Can you create lava? Our STEAM Challenge is a great way to invite students to practice researching and using their imagination, in a way that will get them excited to want to learn more about volcanoes.

For this challenge, students will use a lime and lemon to create lava!

Are you up for the challenge? Do you think you can create lava?

What you need:

  • Lime or Lemon

  • Plastic Cup or Plate

  • Baking Soda

  • Food Coloring

  • Dish Soap

  • ½ cup Vinegar

  • Spoon

What you need to do…

  • Cut a lime and lemon in half. Squeeze with your hands and pour the juice into a cup.

  • Add a spoonful of baking soda, 3-4 drops of food coloring, and a drop of dish soap to the middle of each fruit.

  • Put the two halves on top of each other on a plate. Pour the juice down the fruit.

  • Then pour the vinegar onto the fruit.

  • Ask yourself what is happening? What could happen with other fruits that have juice? Take this idea and use different fruits!
